4 January 2011, KUALA LUMPUR: The 2010 season was considered the most prominent for Australian continental team, Drapac-Porsche when achieving success in Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL), Japan Cup, Tour of Okinawa, Melbourne- Warnabool and the recent Tour of Bright.
Now registered as Drapac Professional Cycling, the Melbourne-based squad aims to continue that momentum in the 2011 edition of LTdL, at least to improve on the overall sixth position attained from the last edition even though without their star rider, Peter McDonald who placed fourth overall and was crowned King of the Mountain of the 2010 LTdL.
This time, team manager Agostino Giramondo lists David Pell, Rhys Pollock, Stuart Shaw, Tom Palmer, and two non-Australian rider, Goesinnen Floris of Holland and Malaysian born cyclist, Mohammad Adiq Hussainie Othman.
Of the six riders, only Palmer and Goesinnen will make their debut in LTdL but Pell, Pollock, Shaw and Adiq will return to continue the challenges in the flat stages.
Shaw was the winner of the final stage in Dataran Merdeka in the 2010 edition, outsprinting Footon Servetto’s Vidal Celis. His attendance along with Pollock and Palmer is expected to strengthen the sprinting power of the team on the flat stages towards the finish line.
33 year-old Shaw, started with Canberra Cycling Club and was first recognized for his quick acceleration when he claimed 3rd placing in the 2008 Halle-Ingooigem 1.1 in Belgium finishing closely behind Quickstep’s Gert Steegmans and Team Columbia’s Michael Rogers. Shaw continues to win 1st stage at the Tour de Gironde in 2009, Ambacht criterion in the Netherlands and the final stage of Tour de Nouvelle Caledonie.
His persistence breakaway awarded Shaw the most aggressive rider at Stage 1 of Jayco Herald Sun Tour last year and he is expected to continue with this diligent style when LTdL kicks off on the island of Langkawi, 23 January.
20 year-old Palmer is quite a talented young rider when he won the Japan Cup criterium, only a few weeks after returning from a nose surgery. The Wangga, New South Wales born rider was the world champion of time trial event at the World Youth Championship in Mexico 2007 before being recruited in Drapac for the 2010 season.
Another Drapac sprinter we will need to keep an eye on is Pollock, who is well experienced competing around Asia after joining Team Marco Polo Racing in 2005 and DFL-Cyclingnews-Litespeed (2007) prior to joining Drapac in 2009.
Meanwhile 30 year old, Pell who ranked 40th overall in LTdL 2010 previously with the Savings & Loans Cycling Team from 2007 to 2009. Among his best results include second place at Stage 4 of Tour of Geelong and seventh place at Stage 1 in the FBD Insurance in Ireland.
Drapac will rely on experienced Dutch rider, Goesinnen to climb the difficult mountain stages of Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands. With skills collected with Skil-Shimano in Europe, including Tour of Flanders and emerged as one of the best placed Dutch rider in the classic 2007 Paris-Roubaix.
"Floris specialises in finding opportunities to breakaway from the peloton early in the race," said Giramondo referring to the rider that had been crowned King of Mountain at Driedaagse de Panne, Second placed King of Mountain in Denmark Runhfahrt and fourth in the Grand Prix Temse throughout 2010.
Adiq will ride again in Drapac colors for 2011
Drapac will continue gaining the support of Malaysian fans as they still retain the multi-talented young rider, Adiq Hussainie for the 2011 season. Adiq was the best Malaysian rider where he came in 35th in LTdL 2010, he is Malaysia’s road race national champion and continues to excel in track events.
However, the second Malaysian to join Drapac for 2011, 23-year-old Amir Mustafa Rusli was not listed in the team’s line-up. The Terengganu lad completed last year under the Malaysian National Team and was the second best Malaysian behind Adiq in 19th of the Overall Asian Rider.
CEO of Le Tour de Langkawi 2011, Mohamed Salleh is optimistic of Adiq riding for Drapac again, “Even without newly signed Amir Mustafa assisting him in the team, we are looking forward to see Adiq perform with an impressive list of riders forming Drapac this year.”
With the increasing performance of Terengganu born riders in recent years, Drapac should be among the favorites throughout 8 flat stages out of 10 that awaits them at this 2011 LTdL.

BM - DRAPAC MAMPU MENCABAR
